Throwing on the potter's wheel

Ever fancied a go on the potter's wheel? Why not book a two hour pottery taster session? It's a great way to relax with friends and family while trying your hand at something different. Family groups with children and community groups are always welcome. A taster session can be a great treat to celebrate someone's birthday or even an upcoming wedding!

And of course, if it's just something you would like to try as a treat for yourself, one to one taster sessions are also available.

The price of each session includes all materials, glazes and firings and all tools and equipment are provided. You can make as much work as you like during the workshop, and after glazing and firing it will be yours to take home with you.

Also a great way to expand your skills if you have already done some throwing and would like a private lesson to learn some new techniques or create more challenging work.

Private classes with one to one tuition and custom tuition for groups can be booked at any time to suit your schedule. These can be taken as a one-off or as a series of classes to guide you through the entire process of making, turning, decorating, firing and glazing ceramic work.

Cost: The base cost for private classes and taster sessions is £25 per hour. The total cost depends on the number of people attending and the duration of the class. For example, a two hour taster session costs £50 in total for one person and £60 in total for two people. The cost for any additional people is £15 for the two hours (£7.50 per hour). All the work you make during a class is ready to pick up about two weeks after your class and the glazes used are food safe.

There are discounts available for children, students, large groups and anyone wishing to take multiple private classes.

For more details about taster sessions and private classes go to our "Throwing for Beginners" page, by following the link in the left hand menu from "Classes and Team Building". You can also call the studio on 0141 550 8030 or contact Emilka directly on emilka (dot) radlinska (at) gmail (dot) com or 07748 268 275.

Visiting Artist

at the Glasgow Ceramics Studio

 Morgane Deffense

Morgane Deffense, Intimate collection (bar of soap), porcelain, 2008

Everyone at the Glasgow Ceramics Studio is very pleased to welcome our new visiting artist, Morgane Deffense, from Brussels, Belgium.

Morgane is a graduate from the La Cambre School of Brussels and will be working in our visiting artist space until the end of July 2012.

Artist's statement: Morgane Deffense

My work questions the everyday object. Transformed, the object becomes an invitation to travel.

By diverting and questioning the subject, I seek to sublime banality, to evoke a lost memory. Sometimes close, sometimes distant, memories that we have about the objects surrounding us, play a catalytic role.

I present a myriad of small diverted objects, sometimes accumulated in series. Their true meaning is questioned by repetition. By transferring one material to another, the object acquires a new countenance, that of a different tranquilizing reality.

Laid on the floor, my artpieces emerge as a result of a singular technical process: using latex and rubber, I capture the objects' imprint. The most recent pieces are barely recognizable old lamps.

Once a mold is made, I continue to divert it in order to exploit various formal possibilities. In contact with the material, the hand, like the eye, gradually asserts itself. Between wonder and dream.

The work is site specific, the site being integral to this dynamic transformation. I do not isolate my objects, but incorporate them into the facilities, increasing the distance between art and the domestic setting, from which this raw material is drawn. The goal is to create an interaction with the audience through gradually discovering this feature.

After graduating from the La Cambre school of Brussels in 2009, I taught at the Academy of Fine and Decorative Arts of Tournai and at the Academy of Fine Arts of Arlon in Belgium. I am honored now to be a guest artist at the Glasgow Ceramics Studio for six months. (February-July 2012). It's always very interesting to work with other artists and to discover the current ceramics in another country. I continue my research through ceramics and other media. Soft material and diversion of the everyday object remain, however, at the heart of my thinking.
